Halloween III: Season of the Witch 4K

"I do love a good joke, and this is the best ever: a joke on the children"

In 2019, I watched Season of the Witch before knowing the Internet anointed it the best Halloween movie.  We were staying in Orlando at the Springhill Suites the night before the annual trip to Universal, because it was cheaper than wasting a night on property.

I half-paid attention to the rebooted Halloween playing on cable, enough to be annoyed at the hackneyed plot (nothing will date a 2010s movie like using podcasters for exposition), while playing Link's Awakening on the Switch.  Halloween 3 came up next, my wife encouraged me to watch, and I was hooked from the first minutes.

Positioning your lead as an alcoholic doctor dripping with raw sexuality, bristling at a failed marriage, willing to drop everything to follow a woman he just met on a quest for answers (and to have sex passionate enough to ignore a woman having her face lasered off in an adjoining room) is genius.  The couple finding out her father was killed by robots to cover up a plot to murder every child using Druid magic embedded in three mask designs that every child will wear at the set time on Halloween (DO NOT think about time zones).  And the plan works somewhat, at least the third channel in California did not heed the warnings of a crazed man who managed to get through to their station manager.

Nothing about this movie should work, and it does brilliantly.  New details pop out in my repeat viewings, to the point where I want to host a screen like Roger Ebert did for Citizen Kane, where anyone could yell 'Stop' and the movie paused for discussion.

The newly restored 4K release from Shout Factory is great.  There's plenty of reviews highlighting technical merits and comparisons to the older SF release.  Aside from the inevitable Steelbook re-re-release, I cannot imagine getting a nicer looking version of SotW.

If this write-up is your first exposure to the best Halloween movie, go watch it.  If you disagree, let me know so I know.
